• “A scenic 200 mile route with ~14,000 ft. of climbing that traverses our California’s exceptional and rugged coastline, the Coast Range Mountains of Monterey County and San Benito County”

Ride Description

  • The Carmel Valley Double is a loop course with 200 miles and about 14,000 feet of climbing according to the Median of 5 Garmin Computers ridden on the Test Ride of 11/14/15 and shown in the Elevation Gain table at

The course starts and ends at the Carmel Middle School (4380 Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923) – 11 miles northwest of Carmel Valley – a sublime pastoral river valley nestled into the towering Santa Lucia range, and is one of the finest wine growing regions in California.

After leaving Carmel-By-The-Sea, you will be riding along Pacific Coast Highway heading south toward Big Sur and onto Lucia before climbing over the famous Nacimiento-Ferguson Rd. (~6.5 miles climb) to Jolon – Lockwood.  Lunch will await you at mile 99 in Bryson – Hesperia located in the beautiful rolling hills between Lake San Antonio and Lake Nacimiento.

After lunch the next 73 miles you will encounter rolling hills on Lockwood-San Lucas Rd. to San Lucas then onto King City, Coburn, and Greenfield. You will then be challenged by the second big climb (~ 20 miles) of the course to Cahoon Summit. After cresting Cahoon Summit, you will reward yourself with a 29 mile descend back to the finish at Carmel Middle School.

  • The Ride with GPS map is here. The route is tentative pending final permit approval from the counties. Feel free to upload this route to your navigation device with the caveat that road or weather conditions may force us to change the route at the last minute. You’ll receive the official cue sheet in your rider packet.

  • The CTC Difficulty Rating of the Carmel Valley Double is Extremely High since it has 14,000 feet of climbing.
